Member for Maitland Jenny Aitchison presented Carl Christie with his commemorative certificate earlier this month.
Mr Christie became a justice of the peace in 1957, and said he appreciated the recognition. “I was surprised. I didn’t really expect it,” he said.
“It’s nice to be able to help people out when they need it. There’s probably a shortage of JPs in the Maitland area, I would encourage people to do it, and you do meet interesting people.”
Mr Christie became a justice of the peace for his profession, which he started as an apprentice electrician.
He is still an active justice of the peace, and lends a hand to any needing a witness of signatures and certifying documents.
Mr Christie was also a recipient of an Order of Australia Medal for service to military history preservation and to the community – which he received in 2016.
