On New Year’s Eve, council was forced to cancel celebrations – including the 9pm fireworks – after thunderstorms wreaked havoc through the Hunter.
On Thursday, Maitland Council’s Place Activation officer David Graham confirmed the fireworks would be part of the After Dark – Winter Solstice on June 22.
He said patrons could expect to see open fires, fire performances, entertainment, activities and hearty food warming the streets of Maitland with the fireworks scheduled to go off with a bang at 9pm – just as the festivities reach their conclusion.
“We are excited to announce this After Dark activity with the addition of the amazing PRD Nationwide Hunter Valley fireworks display that we didn’t manage to use on New Year’s Eve,” Mr Graham said.
“Winter Solstice celebrates the shortest day of the year in the southern hemisphere.
“I really encourage everyone to head to The Levee, bring their family and friends along, help us to warm the streets and soak up what will no doubt be a wonderful atmosphere.”
Following the cancellation of the recent New Year’s Eve fireworks due to the weather, Council have re-scheduled the fireworks display to coincide with the family friendly After Dark – Winter Solstice activity on Saturday, June 22.
After Dark – Winter Solstice will run from 5pm to 9pm at The Levee Shared Zone and Riverside Walk on Saturday.
Newcastle City Council were also forced to cancel its New Year’s Eve festivities but have confirmed the postponed fireworks will be used for an after dark celebration on Australia Day.
