Liberal councillor Mitchell Griffin has submitted a notice of motion for the 'dive-in' for next week's council meeting on Tuesday.
The motion calls on council to look in to the possibility of including a series of ‘Dive-In Cinema’ nights at Maitland Pool as part of the 2019/20 swimming program.
Cr Griffin said a dive-in cinema could be an asset in boosting the city's visitor economy.
“Dive-In cinema has the potential of creating a unique user experience for the Maitland area and beyond, with the potential of bringing visitors to both the pool and the city," he said.
“You could just imagine the atmosphere of residents chilling out in a floating tube, on a warm summers evening whilst watching a flick on the big screen."
The concept is based on similar programs currently in use at Blacktown and Cumberland Councils.
As part of these programs, Council would host a number of under the stars cinema experiences at the local pools.
Patrons would bring floating devices such as tubes or floating chairs to the pool to sit in while watching a movie on a big screen.
Programs run at Cumberland and Blacktown Council have been cost neutral through a cover charge for entry.
Blacktown Council has found this program to be so successful that they are now into their third season.
"You could theme each event towards a different audience such as animation for families, thrillers for teenagers or an action movie for adults, you could even look at a special Jaws screening night," Cr Griffin added.
“Best of all, it brings night time activation to our pools in a unique way in which we haven’t seen before.
"Even if the weather isn’t kind, we could easily move the event from outside to the comfort of the indoor pool.”
If the Liberal councillor's motion for the event is successful, council will review the viability of a dive-in program in Maitland and report back to councillors before June.
