Former councillor Brian Burke's suggestion last week that Maitland needed a designated Hall of Fame drew a strong response from readers - some in favour, others thinking the idea was a waste of money.

Firstly, I acknowledge that this is my passion and that not everyone will be in favour.
The one thing Mr Burke did not do was stipulate where exactly he would like to see the Hall of Fame situated.
The Mercury contacted him to get something more specific - some meat on the bone.
"Firstly, I acknowledge that this is my passion and that not everyone will be in favour," Mr Burke said. "I accept that.
"And having been a councillor for years, I also realise that council doesn't have a bottomless pit of money, and for that reason it's unlikely that there would be much support for construction of a new building."
So, what does he suggest?
"I've done no research on these, so here's just a couple of first-up suggestions. My first suggestion would be Maitland Park Bowling Club, which has been doing it tough for some time," he said. "Maybe we could incorporate a hall of fame into that building.
"It's located in Maitland Park which is the centre of Maitland's sporting activities and it attracts thousands of people every weekend.
"I have said before I believe it's one of the best regional sporting complexes in NSW - possibly the best.
"I would also think whoever came to the club to see the Hall of Fame would be a good thing for the club. They might stay for a drink or for lunch which would help trade."
His second suggestion is out of left field.
"What about Maitland Gaol," he said. "We could either section off a part of it, or alternatively we could have our Hall of Fame dotted throughout the cells. That would make it unique."
Mr Burke would love to see a venue with old film clips running, and images and write-ups of the city's leading citizens, whether they be sporting, artistic, political, business or humanitarian.
"The '55 flood has some wonderful old film clips, or the Flying Gollans in action," he said. "They were a trick riding troupe from Maitland who toured all over Australia, and were a top attraction at the Royal Easter Show.
"The same family who were a key part of Maitland Rugby back in the 70s.
"Or maybe Ruth Cracknell in some of her wonderful old comedy roles.
"That kind of thing ... giving people a glimpse of Maitland's history."
