On Tuesday, Maitland City councillors unanimously backed the motion which will see three pilots held at East Maitland Aquatic Centre in January 2020.
The motion was originally tabled by deputy mayor Mitchell Griffin in February, sparking a probe into the feasibility of the program.
Now, with the program locked in, Cr Griffin said he was thrilled by the positive response to the proposal.
"There has been widespread support for this event since I first raised it in February," he said.
"I have had people as far away as Gosford talking to me about it. I am particularly impressed by the proposal by the council staff.
"I was originally expecting an ad-hoc event with a screen and perhaps a BBQ, but as per usual we have seen quality from the staff with an event the city can be proud off.
"This will include food trucks, under water lighting and a silent disco prior to the movie. This pilot program will be great for our city."
The concept is based on similar programs currently in use at Blacktown and Cumberland Councils.
Cumberland and Blacktown Council's programs have been cost neutral through a cover charge for entry.
"The benefit of this pilot is the interest that it has attracted from our neighbor cities like Newcastle and Lake Macquarie," Cr Griffin said.
"We are likely to see people attracted to come to Maitland for this event due to its uniqueness, and hopefully they will make a day of it by supporting our local businesses and helping our visitor economy."
For the first session a maximum of 200 'in pool' tickets and 550 'general tickets' will be made available.
Tickets will be $10 for pool including use of a pool seat and $5 for grandstand/ grass seating only.
All attendees will have access to the pool and other activities before the movie commences.
Patrons can bring floating devices such as tubes or floating chairs to the pool to sit in while watching a movie on a big screen.
