The four Women's Premier League sides - first grade, reserves, under-17s and under-14s - wore pink socks in their games and the club also organised raffles, merchandise and baked goods to help raise money.

It's the first time the club has run the breast cancer gala day, but sponsorship coordinator Craig Faulkner says it won't be the last.

"We're going to be doing it every year," he said.

Faulkner said being a women's club, breast cancer was an important cause to support as some women in the club had been touched by the disease.

The gala day was held on the club's last home game of the season, in which they came away with a win, two draws and a loss.

But Faulkner said the day wasn't about competition. Some of the senior players volunteered as ball girls for the younger sides.

"It's a good chance for team bonding," he said. "It's not just about winning or losing, it's about having fun."

In a further show of community support, the club plans to partner with Headspace - a youth mental health foundation - next season.

Faulkner said the club included players from as far as Scone, as Thornton is the only WPL team in the Hunter outside the Newcastle area.

"We're really a stepping stone for girls to get to that next level," he said. "We're the only club in the Hunter Valley in the WPL.

"We do struggle against the big clubs financially. But we are a strong-knitted club."

The Redbacks are away to South Wallsend this Sunday and will take on Adamstown and New Lambton in the last two games of the season.

In other soccer news, this week is Northern NSW Football Referee Recognition Week, which encourages the community to express their gratitude and appreciation for the hard work of match officials throughout the season.

Throughout the week, NNSWF and sponsor Newcastle Permanent will share stories of match officials from across the region, to highlight their perspective and unique experience of their role.
