The drought-stricken Middleton family who shared their plight with The Mercury earlier this month are now breathing a sigh of relief.
They have secured agistment for some of their herd.
Forty-seven calves boarded a truck at the farm in Mingoola, west of Tenterfield, on Thursday. The destination? Greener pastures. They are bound for a paddock in Bowraville, which is west of Nambucca Heads.
On top of that, 60 cows will be split between two agistment locations over the next few weeks.
That will leave their heavily pregnant cows at home, which have already started calving.
It's a huge win for the family. They would have been forced to sell up if they could not find agistment.
They have already spent $250,000 on feed to keep their animals alive and the financial strain is taking a toll.
We're in an area that's not supposed to look like this, we're supposed to get rain from storms. We've had dry times before, but to have no grass and dry ground for a year now it's just gone on for too long, we're at the end of the road I'm afraid,
- Brooke Middleton said.
The pregnant cows will finish calving in November and the family will then look for agistment to accommodate them.
