The mercury is expected to reach up to 32 degrees in Maitland in an ominous sign of things to come this summer.
It will be the first total fire ban for the region since the Bushfire Danger Period kicked off on September 1.
The ban kicks off at midnight on Thursday. The fire danger rating for Friday is 'severe' - the third highest category behind extreme and catastrophic.
The NSW Rural Fire Service (NSW RFS) provides the following advice for severe conditions:
- Well prepared homes that are actively defended can provide safety during a fire
- Follow your Bush Fire Survival Plan and remain vigilant
- Keep informed by listening to local radio, watching television news broadcasts and monitoring www.rfs.nsw.gov.au.
