Peter Margetts of Ashtonfield took on The Great Escape, a 10-day rally from Cowra to Canberra via the South Coast, with his mate of 50 years, Robert Watt of Tenambit.
The pair made the trip in a 1999 Ford LTD, and were lucky to only suffer one busted tyre of the 4000 kilometre trek.
Mr Margetts said he was looking to do a rally as he has had a long-term interest in cars, and The Great Escape popped up.
He went into it with no connection to cystic fibrosis but along the way met many people who had been touched by the condition.
"I was originally planning to do it as a one-off, but after meeting people and learning more about it I feel I might do it again next year," he said.
When the pair left, they had raised $4500, but had collected double that by the time they came home last Thursday.
Mr Margetts said it was great to see towns he had never heard of before, some of which had no petrol station and only a pub.
"We had to be very wary of fuel," he said. "When you came across a service station you filled up whether you needed to or not."
Mr Margetts said he welcomed any donations towards next year's rally.
