Manager Sarah Adams said the free classes were part of an initiative to promote activity in the community.
"We received a club grant for Movement Matters," she said.
"So it's about trying to get the community active in Rutherford. We are trying a bunch of different things and decided to try self-defence classes.
"We have about 12 people who are attending the self-defence
"It's also a good opportunity to help the community feel safer."
"These ones have been targeted at adults but early next year we are thinking about doing a school holiday program for kids."
"It's something a bit different. Obviously the more people the better which can maximise the impact."
Self-defence classes are held every Tuesday during the month of October from 1.15pm until 2pm at the Maitland Neighbourhoood Centre located at 13 Arthur Street, Rutherford.
