A 78th minute try by Kingsley Jennings and a Kyle Handford conversion delivered the victory dubbed #WeditforHarry in honour of the majority of the team's Pickers under-18 teammate Harry Hofman who died six years ago.
The team had come together to honour a pledge to each other in the wake of Hofman's sudden death and have gone from doubting they would be competitive in the Newcastle and Hunter Community Rugby League B-grade to winning the A-grade title.
Played in rain at St John Oval, Charlestown, Dora Creek led 12-4 at halt-time courtesy of two converted tries.
Jaiden Bell scored the Bears first-half four pointer.
Thornton-Beresfield cut the margin to just two points when Declan Keating crossed for a try in the 56th minute. Handford adjusted his radar and kicked the first of three consecutive conversions.
Bell crossed for a second try in the 70th minute and with Handford's conversion the Bears led for the first time with the score 16-12.
Dora Creek replied straight away with a converted try taking them out to 18-16 lead with five minutes on the clock.
The never-say-die Bears were not going to let the grand final pass them and they mustered the last try through Jennings.
The Aberglasslyn Ants won the Ladies League Tag grand final 14-2 against University but were on the losing end in women's tackle and golden point losers in the B-grade.
