The private medical imaging centre Alto Imaging has been planning the machine's arrival for months.
A 90 tonne crane stopped traffic on Wednesday morning when part of the equipment was delivered to the George Street, East Maitland premises. The room will now be built around the camera once it is in place.
"It's very exciting for the people of Maitland," said Chris Travis, Chief Operating Officer and Chief Nuclear Medicine Scientist.
"This is true world class (equipment).
"It will mean better access, less travel and no cost parking on site."
Bulk billing will be available for patients having Medicare-indicated tests.
