The application, lodged by Sydney-based developers Panthera Property Group, has been on public exhibition and now sits with council for consideration.
The Panthera Property Group recently purchased and lodged a development application for the former Supercheap Auto site opposite the Kmart car park in Bourke Street and also owns Maitland Riverside Plaza (Kmart complex) on The Levee. The proposal for the Supercheap Auto site also included 86 serviced apartments across six floors.
The site (373 High Street) currently under consideration, once operated as a Westpac Bank branch and is three doors from Maitland Post Office.
The proposal is for two retail ground level outlets, 49 serviced apartments, an entry lobby, rear parking with an exit via Coffin Lane. The application also includes the demolition of all existing structures on site.
The serviced apartments would operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week with at least one staff member on site to assist guests. The retail tenancies are expected to employ two staff each.
In a statement of environmental effects the applicant said that the proposal provides much needed uses in the town centre to support the growing economic role of Maitland and the Hunter.
"Providing serviced apartments within the town centre creates opportunities for over night stays in the town centre for tourists and business people and encourages and promotes the town centre as a tourist destination and for greater economic activity," the report said.
