A spokesperson for the Bureau of Meteorology said the conditions should ease on Saturday and Sunday.
"Damaging wind gusts, large hail and locally heavy rain are a possibility in the Lower Hunter tomorrow," they said.
Also in the news:
"There are showers and storms west of the divide today which will move east as showers into the Lower Hunter.
"The system producing them out west today will be further east tomorrow which means we will see showers and storms in the Hunter, possibly severe and possibly severe on Friday as well."
"By Saturday and Sunday we've got some lingering showers but it looks like most of the conditions will start to ease by Saturday and Sunday."
