A big win for the residents of Maitland, this key project in the Thornton Road Network plan will see Maitland City Council construct a four way intersection and traffic lights which will significantly improve traffic flow along the busy stretch.
The bulk of the funding for the project comes from the $9.5 million worth of funding secured from the NSW Government's Housing Acceleration Fund.
In addition, funds collected from the Thornton North Urban Release Area developer contributions and Council's capital works program will be used to deliver the upgrades.
Construction will begin in mid 2022 and is expected to take approximately a year to complete, subject to conditions.

"The upgrade of this intersection is one of several projects identified within Council's many plans for the Thornton and Chisholm area, and it's an important piece of the puzzle," Maitland mayor Philip Penfold said.
"The dedication and hard work of our Council officers and other elected representatives to go after and secure this funding should be commended, and we're looking forward to seeing the works begin and for the benefits of these upgrades flow on to our community."
Parliamentary Secretary for the Hunter Taylor Martin said the NSW Government was supporting the Council by investing in the project through the Housing Acceleration Fund.
"This is important infrastructure that will help reduce congestion, improve safety for motorists, and support up to 1,600 new homes in the area,' Mr Martin said.
With funding now secured, Council will call for formal tenders from suitably qualified contractors for the engagement of a principal contractor to undertake the works.
These works mark a key milestone in the Thornton Road Network project, aimed at delivering critical infrastructure to support the fast growing communities of Thornton and Chisholm.
Council will continue to provide the community with updates on the project as it progresses. Find out more information and keep updated at the Thornton Road Network project page on Maitland Council's website.
