Hamish is Maitland Fire and Rescue’s open day mascot and is spreading the word about fire safety.
Visitors attending the Church Street station on Saturday can take a glimpse into the service and watch safety demonstrations, take station tours and inspect firefighting equipment.
There will be fun for kids with Fire and Rescue NSW working with LEGO City this year to promote fire safety awareness.
Maitland Fire Station and the new Rutherford Fire Station will throw their doors open between 10am and 2pm on Saturday.
The Rutherford open day is a great opportunity for the public to see inside the new Rutherford Fire Station in Mustang Drive, which was officially opened last month.
Maitland fire fighter Darren Lancaster said he and his colleagues will demonstrate how officers remove doors from cars with special rescue equipment.
Visitors will also have the opportunity to don protective masks and glasses and try to negotiate their way through a smoke filled room.
“The day is really putting the focus on kids and getting them fire aware, through demonstrations right down to sitting in a big red truck,” Mr Lancaster said.
Mr Lancaster also took the opportunity to thank Maitland open day sponsors L J Hooker Maitland and Heritage Towing.
