While spring marks the start of magpie swooping season, it also marks the start of the breeding season for snakes and it's time to be vigilant.
Justin Lantry from Bill's Snake Relocate said snakes are very active during mating season, particularly males.
"Right now, all the males are out in search of females and this can see them travel great distances and through many backyards," Mr Lantry said. "It's not a good time for our pets because they want to interact with these visitors. If possible it's a good idea to keep pets inside or in areas that can reduce the chances of any interaction with snakes."
Mr Lantry said some dog trainers have started to do snake avoidance training as part of general obedience lessons.
"Most of the time snakes are just passing through our yards.Things you can do to stop them taking an interest in your yard are: Reduce cover and shelter. Wood/rock/rubbish piles, ground covering plants, clutter etc.”
