The 21-year-old Raymond Terrace man had earlier been taken to Maitland Local Court where he was formally refused bail for charges relating to the theft of the cigarette machine from Shenanigans at the Imperial.
The man was being returned to Maitland police station at about 4.45pm when he allegedly broke free from two officers as he was being moved from the rear of a police truck.
Police will allege the 21-year-old attempted to scale the station’s boundary fence, but was pursued by two police officers who pulled him down from the fence.
The accused suffered a cut to his hand and was taken to Maitland Hospital for first aid before being returned to police custody.
He was subsequently charged with attempting to escape lawful custody and will face court at a future date.
