Representatives from North Construction & Building, The Mutual, architects dwp, and community leaders met at the site to celebrate the official start of the construction.
The dwp-designed building will be seven storeys high, incorporating a multi-level carpark and three levels of commercial space.
The modern design features special structural elements, including a large exposed Y-shaped column supporting level four and higher.
North managing Construction & Building director Matthew Cook said the soil turning ceremony was a great opportunity for stakeholders to meet and start the project.
"We not only got a chance to celebrate in breaking first ground but also to publicly share the beautiful building design that will transform this area," he said.
Mr Cook said North would work with surrounding businesses to make the process as smooth as possible.
The Mutual bought the 1480 square metre block, which included the site of the former Green Hills Pizza Hut in 2016.
Maitland councillors voted in favour of the $13.6 million development in August, 2018.
