Inspecting the work with Dungog Shire Mayor Cr John Connors, Federal Member for Lyne Dr David Gillespie said $1,436,853 in Federal funding had been invested in the Dungog Central Business District revitalisation and beautification project, with a further $1,260,000 coming from the State Government.
The project has included extensive road rehabilitation work between Mary and Mackay Streets which is now complete.
"Significant streetscape works are also being undertaken including the installation of floodlighting at pedestrian crossings, blisters for footpath connections and intersections, garden bollards and pedestrian management infrastructure," Dr Gillespie said.
The project also includes the installation of new fixed street furniture including recycle bins, street seating and parking delineation.
"The major road works, combined with the beautification including new lighting, refuges, bollards, street furniture, footpaths, cycleways, gardens and tree plantings will improve the streetscape and revitalise the heart of Dungog," Dr Gillespie added.
The Dowling Street improvements came after extensive community feedback on the project.
Among other things the community overwhelmingly rejected a proposal to have a median strip down the wide street to help with drainage issues.
