This week, Maitland City councillors unanimously supported a proposal filled with ideas from the Bicentenary of Morpeth working group.
I must say well done to the committee who has worked very hard on this project
- Mitchell Griffin
The proposal identifies three infrastructure projects, including a riverside shared pathway, Steamer Street shared pathway, and lighting of Morpeth Bridge.
It also includes a program of activities for the weekend of the Bicentenary with a Corroboree and Morpeth Bridge open day.
Liberal councillor Mitchell Griffin said he was looking forward to the scope of projects put forward to celebrate the townships long history.
"I am glad to see this one come to council. I must say well done to the committee who has worked very hard on this project," he said.
"I'm looking forward to November 2021." Morpeth was founded by Napoleonic War veteran Lieutenant Edward Charles Close who established the township in 1821 - which makes it Australia's second oldest port. Now supported, the working group and council staff will progress to detailed planning, project approval and investigation into funding opportunities for the proposed projects.
