To celebrate International Women's Day the Mercury spoke to some of the women behind the scenes of the $470million project. Their excitement for the new hospital - and their roles in its development - is undeniable.
While projects of this magnitude have traditionally been male dominated, this project has a healthy representation of women - especially at management level.
A special morning tea on Monday, March 8 will see a large number of female staff from builders Multiplex, NSW Health Infrastructure, CBRE Project Management and Hunter New England Health celebrate International Women's Day.
Narelle Bromilow, Health Infrastructure's Project Director, is excited by the difference the new hospital will make to the community.
She said while the number of women on the project was not unusual it was still not the norm. "Research has shown diversity across teams, whether that be gender diversity or cultural diversity, makes them more efficient and productive and higher performing," she said.
"We do have some really amazing women on this project which you don't necessarily see on all projects."
Emma Capaldi-Corin said the number women charged with delivering the Maitland hospital project was "a great testament to women in this industry".
"We are very passionate about the project, we communicate very well together and we all have our own specialties and it is lovely that we are bringing all our skills together bring to enable a great project."
She is the ICT lead for Hunter New England health which means she brings together every element of Information, Communication and Technology (ICT) into the building.
The new hospital will have lots of new technology for staff, patients and visitors.
"It's a very exciting project," she said. "It's a beautiful hospital and I am so excited for the people of Maitland and surrounds that they are going to have this state-of-the art hospital for them to use. I feel very proud to be a part of it."
Kirsty Gill is the Project Director at CBRE Project Management and is the client representative on site managing the project's scope, budget and risk.
She said having a good mix of women and men in leadership roles meant a diverse range of opinions in the room and different ways of approaching an issue.
"That's what is really great on Maitland, we have that real mixture of men and women and people from all different walks of life which really make us challenge each other and get great outcomes," she said.
