The residential population near the Raymond Terrace and Government roads intersection is increasing and Cr Philip Penfold believes it is time to install a turning lane.
He said an infrastructure plan for Thornton had earmarked the need for traffic lights at the busy intersection in the future.
The demand is significant.
- Cr Philip Penfold, Maitland City Council
Cr Penfold said a turning lane or overtaking lane was needed on Raymond Terrace Road to reduce the risk of front-to-rear crashes when traffic coming from the Maitland direction stopped to turn right into Government Road.
“We’ve got an 80km/h road [Raymond Terrace Road] intersecting with a 50km/h road council road [Government Road] leading into Thornton,” he said.
“Obviously Thornton North and Chisholm are growing significantly.
“The demand is significant. You can imagine the issues that exist, particularly in peak hour, when people are going to and from work.
“You’ve got a single lane – the traffic conditions become dangerous.
"However, there is a lot of land on the edges to be able to improve the intersection to make it safer.”
