A 29-year-old woman has been charged and police are on the hunt for another two men after the incident at an Endeavour Street home on Sunday night.
A woman, two men and three children, who were aged 12 and under, were at the home about 8.45pm Sunday when they heard loud banging at the front door.
As the woman opened the door three people, a woman and two men, allegedly forced their way into the home.
A male victim was punched and kicked while the other male at the home was allegedly menaced with a knife to prevent him from protecting the other man.
Police said after a short period of time, the alleged intruders fled the scene.
The occupants of the home later discovered a vehicle parked in the driveway had been damaged.
After the alleged offenders fled, police and ambulance were called out to the residence.
The male who was assaulted suffered facial injuries including contusions, cuts and a black eye.
He was not transported to hospital for further treatment.
Police established a crime scene and conducted forensic examinations.
Investigations led police to a park in Telarah where they arrested a 29-year-old woman from the westersn Sydney suburb of Doonside.
Central Hunter crime manager Detective Inspector George Radmore said when police approached the woman, she allegedly appeared to hide an extendable baton in a vehicle.
The baton was seized and the woman was arrested.
She was later charged with aggravated break and enter, commit serious indictable offence and possession of a prohibited weapon.
The 29-year-old was refused bail in Maitland Local Court on Wednesday. The matter will return to court again on August 29.
Police are still searching for two men who they believe may be able to assist with inquiries.
