Investigations into parking in the Maitland CBD began earlier this year – following the completion of works at Stockland Green Hills – in a bid to explore parking availability and future options.
Maitland Council’s acting infrastructure and works group manager Kevin Stein said the parking study will investigate a wide scope.
“Council is undertaking a Central Maitland Parking Study which will review the current adopted plans for Central Maitland and will require car parking surveys of the area,” he said.
“As part of the study, there will be consultation with stakeholders, including transport providers, government agencies and the community.
“Transport consultants GTA have been engaged by Council to carry out the parking study.”
The scope of the parking study will include focus on business areas for parking surveys, consideration of multi-deck car park options, review of gateway parking strategy, community engagement and council briefings.
“The call to review parking in Central Maitland was originally discussed as a Notice of Motion at a Council Meeting in July 2017,” Mr Stein said.
“It was decided that a review of car parking in Central Maitland would take place following the completion of The Levee and Green Hills redevelopment projects.”
The update was sparked after Independent councillor Philip Penfold – who campaigned for a multi-level car park in Central Maitland as part of his mayoral candidacy – put forward a question with notice.
It is anticipated the parking study will be completed by July 2019.
