The proposal to demolish the historically significant landmark and build a private residence was before Port Stephen's Council this week.
The council confirmed that the matter had been withdrawn for further consideration and will be back before council at a later date.
Pomfrett's Cottage on Paterson Road, was originally part of Albion Farm. It is listed as a significant heritage item in the Port Stephens Local Environmental Plan.
Albion Farm was a site Governor Macquarie allocated to pre-settlers in 1812 to look at producing more food for the starving colony. It is Australia's oldest continuing rural farming site. The cottage is believed to have been built the 1860s.
Chris Richards from Maitland Heritage Guardians said a recent Mercury report on the proposed demolition and rebuild struck a cord with the Woodville community.
"It triggered a flood of emotion from the community. This building should not go. It's an important local landmark," Mr Richards said.
