The death toll is expected to rise as rescuers begin digging through dust and ash following Saturday's eruption of Mt Semeru on Java island, Indonesia.
At the time of publication, 14 people were known to have perished, while hospitals are continuing to take in floods of casualties. Predominately, the injured have suffered burns.

Rescuers have been filmed using their bare hands to dig out those trapped inside buried houses and vehicles.

BNPB official Abdul Muhari told Reuters that 10 people trapped around mines near the volcano had been rescued.
Authorities have told world media that the efforts have been further hindered by the severing of a strategic bridge that would otherwise connect the neighbouring Lumajang district with Malang city.
Mt Semeru stands at 3600 metres and is one of Indonesia's 130 active volcanoes. It last erupted in January 2021.
