When heavy rain and flooding left parts of the Maitland area underwater earlier this month Joe Lynch and Harriet Bell were holding their breath.

This time luck was on their side and their commercial vegetable patch on Glenarvon Road escaped flooding from the Hunter River and didn't receive as much rain as the surrounding area.

"The levy system here is amazing, the water was right up towards the top of the levy and it kept it there. We were very lucky. We know that some people in other places weren't so lucky," Mr Lynch said.

The circumstances allowed them to maintain their weekly vegetable subscription and keep their customers supplied with fresh veggies.

That's right, just like subscribing to get a magazine or a newspaper, now you can subscribe to get your weekly dose of healthy food.

The venture, which was born out of the COVID-19 pandemic, allowed the pair to be paid a fair pice for their food and have guaranteed customers, so there wasn't any food waste.

The move has gone from strength to strength and they cannot keep up with the demand. They even have a waiting list to take part.

They used to sell their produce at the Slow Food Earth Market Maitland, and at other farmers markets, but since they started the subscription model they haven't had any extra produce to offload.

Mr Lynch said Ms Bell did a great job on the planting side of things so that customers had a wide range of seasonal veggies over the subscription period. He said they were planting new crops often to be able to continue to keep up with the demand.

"The subscription is usually 10 weeks up front and it allows us to focus on delivering that for them every week. We have a smaller box for $30 and a bigger box for $40 and we offer eggs on top of that," Mr Lynch said.
