The lamps were earmarked for replacement by modern overhead catenary lights under the council’s bold plan to redevelop central Maitland into a precinct to be known as The Levee.
“I have been contacted by a number of people who were originally concerned about the removal of the lights but are now picturing the lights in other locations where they would look good,” Cr Geoghegan said.
One suggestion was for some of the lights to be used at the eastern end of High Street outside selected iconic heritage buildings such as Maitland Regional Art Gallery; another, to use them to line the road in Maitland Park.
Cr Geoghegan said he would prefer the lights were not placed in storage.
“It would allow consideration for perhaps a few of the lights to remain as part of the new upgrade,” he said.
Catenary lights have been chosen for The Levee because of the increases safety they offer to people as a result of their brightness.
Cr Geoghegan said the aim was for more people to use the mall at night.
“Until the council formally calls for submissions, I would invite anyone to contact me with their ideas.”
Work on The Levee is scheduled to start early next year.
