The development application, slated for completion in mid-2017, includes the demolition of the existing grandstand and construction of a single 1000 seat grandstand with improved access and a better view of the playing field.
New change rooms, public amenities and a canteen designed to cater for a range of sporting and community events are also in the works.
Maitland City Council’s senior project architect Aaron Cook said the facility was designed through a collaboration between Council and the NSW Government Architect’s Office.
“The development will feature an improved landscaped entry forecourt with a generous, tree-lined, public access path from James Street,” Mr Cook said.
Council said the new development will continue to honour local identities with links to the grounds whose names are currently found on plaques and signage at the sportsground.
The redevelopment is jointly funded by the Hunter Infrastructure and Investment Fund (HIIF) and Maitland City Council.
The HIIF will contribute $5.6 million towards the $8.6 million bill.
The grandstand upgrade is included in Council’s Delivery Program 2013-17 (Revised), which is available to view by visiting maitland.nsw.gov.au
