Customers were perplexed to find the bar closed, with a sign on the door the only clue as to why the business was shut.
On January 29 the owners of the Maitland cafe and bar posted a message on social media announcing the closure.
“Due unfortunate personal circumstances, Marmooks will be closed for the foreseeable future,” the post read.
On the same day a conflicting message was posted on the business’ facebook page.
“We are hoping to reopen soon. Just need a well deserved break.
“Stay posted and we will keep everyone up to date with the reopening.”
The business has since been listed for sale with Wilsons brokers accompanied by a $250,000 price tag.
Wilsons declined to comment on the sale, but the Mercury understands an offer had been made on the business.
The outgoing owners have hinted at the sale on social media after posting this reply to a concerned customer:
“Sorry we are closed. Going through a change of ownership.”
The property is listed as a cafe by day, restaurant and bar by night.
The price includes the renovated premises, bar, dining and alfresco dining areas and an existing liquor license.
The venue is licensed to cater for 120 seats, has a commercial kitchen, upstairs office and stock room.
Marmook and Poom Poom’s was opened in 2014 by the Adderley family.
It was named after the childhood nicknames of Maitland brothers Michael and Matt Adderley, who co-owned the business with Karen Flint.
At the time it was touted as Maitland’s version of a Darby Street bar found in Newcastle.
The business declined to comment.
