Internal painting is now complete at the High Street building as part of renovations to the heritage-listed landmark.
Workers are also painting the building’s exterior and work is expected to be complete within the next eight weeks.
“The works were developed in alignment after consultation with a heritage architect,” an Australia Post spokesperson said.
Starting in September last year, the work will also include the restoration and repair of the building’s clock tower, however it is unknown whether or not residents will hear it chime again.
“I’m very pleased with the progress,” Maitland mayor Peter Blackmore said.
“They’re really getting stuck into the job.”
Described as Victorian Italianate, the post office was built in 1881 from plans by colonial architect James Barnet.
The clock tower was installed two years later in June 1883.
“It’s going to be a showpiece,” Cr Blackmore said.
“The heritage colours are great; it’ll be a centre point.”
