The Labor representative held a community meeting on Friday night, along with the party’s federal candidate for Paterson Meryl Swanson and Maitland’s Labor councillors.
Ms Aitchison said many people were concerned that they had felt the strain of Maitland council’s seven year rate rise, but a merger could mean the extra money would be funneled to the Dungog area instead of improving services in Maitland.
“There’s a lot of concern about how the government has gone about this,” she said. “There’s not a lot of time for the community to discuss it.”
