About midday police received calls to say a man was skulking around the car park of the Bradford Hotel. The offender allegedly tried to open several car doors before stealing a white vehicle and heading up the New England Highway towards Singleton.
Shortly after, police spotted the vehicle on the New England Highway at Greta and unsuccessfully attempted to pull the driver over. A police pursuit followed and the stolen vehicle headed back through the streets of Rutherford.
When the chase reached Pumphouse Cescent, police deemed the driving to be dangerous and terminated the pursuit.
Following the termination Central Hunter Police launched a search of the area and located the stolen vehicle in Ruby Road, Rutherford. With the help of information provided by the public police located the offender, a 27-year-old Rutherford man, concealed underneath a nearby house.
Police officers searched underneath the home and during a short struggle arrested the Rutherford man. He was taken to Maitland Police Station where he was treated for minor injuries.
He was charged with Skye’s Law, three counts of steal motor vehicle, trespass, disqualified driving, fraud, resist arrest and assault. He was refused bail to appear at Maitland Local Court on Friday April 8.
Central Hunter acting crime manager Acting Detective Inspector Mitch Dubojski praised the community for their help during the search.
