The topic pricked their interest in 2005 and within a year they were researching historical accounts of horsemen at war and replicating their contribution with paint.
Some paintings focus on the horse’s perspective, while others look at the unbreakable bond between horse and rider and moments in a battle.
“Every painting is based on a fact and something that we’ve read,” Mrs Marshall said.
“I felt we had to paint these stories. I was amazed at the stories and I was drawn to the camaraderie between them.”
Their work is on display at Morpeth Gallery with artist John Bradley, who is a specialist in aircraft and militaria. Their works form the gallery’s Lest We Forget exhibition, which closes on Monday at 5pm.
The trio will be at the gallery until the exhibition closes.
Mr Bradley is regarded as one of Australia's most versatile artists. He has dabbled in a range of works from Australian bush themes to steam locomotives.
Mr Marshall approaches his works with a mixed technique that includes acrylics, oils and alkyds. He likes to keep experimenting with the paint until he achieves the affect he wants. Mrs Marshall uses oil paints.
