The Hunter Valley’s first Anglican church north of Newcastle is currently being reviewed by the Heritage Council of NSW.
St James Anglican Father Chris Orczy said when the parish realised the 175-year-old church wasn’t listed on the heritage register they were quite shocked.
So the process to get it listed began several years ago, and is now in the stage of receiving public submissions.
Fr Orczy said he believed the site needed to be protected due to its community significance.
“It’s a landmark,” he said.
“St James is in some ways the church of Morpeth.”
Fr Orczy said he realised how special the church was the first time he saw it.
“I knew there was something beyond a normal building here,” he said.
And while the church goers know how remarkable the structure is, Fr Orczy said the heritage listing will acknowledge that externally.
“It’s a nice bit of recognition for the parish,” he said.
