Police targeted drivers who illegally used mobile phones, committed traffic offences in school zones and had vehicles that were not up to the proper safety standards during a statewide blitz on Wednesday.
There was a visibly heavier presence of police vehicles on roads in the Maitland area on Wednesday morning.
NSW Traffic and Highway Patrol commander Assistant Commissioner John Hartley said, aside from dangerous driving, police would also clamp-down on motorists who drove vehicles that were not roadworthy, as part of the operation.
“We want those on our roads to be fully responsible for both their driving and their vehicles,” he said.
“To see vehicles in poor condition, particularly those with bull bars with fishing rod holders attached, pose significant risks in the event of a crash.
“With the road toll currently at 244 - 45 more than this time last year - now is the time for everyone to get the message about being fully accountable for both their actions and their vehicles.”
