Lifeline Australia has launched an online survey in an effort to understand the reach and impact of loneliness in communities like the Hunter.

The six-question anonymous survey is available on the Lifeline website and through the organisation’s social media channels until September 9.
It is being conducted in the lead-up to R U OK Day, on September 8.
“Isolation and loneliness can be very significant risk factors in suicidality,” Lifeline Australia CEO Pete Shmigel said.
“Disconnection from family, friends and community can drive despair, particularly for those who may already be struggling – while connection is a key way to protect people from the risk of suicide.
“Indeed, thousands of Lifeline’s callers report that they are lonely and some 55 per cent report that they live alone, and many call us for a real conversation with a caring human being.”
Suicide rates in Australia have recently risen with official figures showing a 10-year high (2864 deaths) in 2014 – an increase of 13.5 percent from the previous year.
This represents about eight suicides across Australia each day.
