Ms Swanson, a Labor Party member, was elected to the House of Representatives in July and replaced Liberal MP Bob Baldwin, who did not contest the election and retired from parliament.
Maitland became part of Paterson after a shuffle of electoral boundaries removed the city from the seat of Hunter, held by Labor’s Joel Fitzgibbon.
