At 11 am on November 11, 1918 the guns of the Western Front fell silent after more than four years continuous warfare during World War I. In November the Germans called for an armistice in order to secure a peace settlement and their eventual unconditional surrender.

The 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month attained a special significance in the post-war years to become Remembrance Day.
This year November 11 marks the 98th anniversary of the Armistice. Each year on this day Australians observe one minute’s silence at 11 am, in memory of those who died or suffered in all wars and armed conflicts.
Commemorative service across the Hunter:
Cardiff- 10:30am, Memorial in front of Cardiff RSL, Macquarie Road, Cardiff
Carrington -Commence 10.30am, Memorial gates, Connolly Park, Cowper Street. If weather is not suitable, service is moved to Carrington Public School.
Cessnock - Cessnock TAFE grounds, assembling at 10.45am for the 11am service.
Clarence Town- At the War Memorial in Grey Street at 10.45am.
Dungog - service at Dungog Show at 10.50am. Or the 10.35 am march from RSL club carpark to cenotaph in Dungog. There is also a 10.30 am service at Lara aged care
East Maitland - East Maitland War Memorial (cnr Willam Street and New England Highway) assemble at 10.30 for 10.40 service.
Greta/Branxton - Branxton Rotunda (John Rose Avenue, Branxton Park). Meet at 10.40am for 11am service.
Karuah 10.45am for an 11am start at Memorial Park, Memorial Drive, Karuah.
Kurri - A service will be held at Kurri Kurri’s Rotary Park at 11am.
Lambton - 10:50am - Lambton Bowls Sport and Recreation Club, Karoola Road, Lambton
Maitland - Main cenotaph in Maitland Park at 10.35am.
Medowie - 10.45am for an 11am start at Medowie Lions Park, Ferodale Road.
Merriwa – 10.45am at the Remembrance Garden.
Murrurundi – War Memorial Gates from 11am.
Muswellbrook – 10.55am, assemble at the cenotaph, on the corner of Bridge and Market Streets, for a short service which will end at the Field of Remembrance.
Nelson Bay - 10.30am for a 10.45am start at the memorial in Apex Park, Government Road.
Newcastle – 10.45m at the cenotaph in Civic Park.
Pelican – 11:00am Memorial Park, Piriwal Street, Pelican
Raymond Terrace - 10.30am for a 10.45am start at the memorial on Jacaranda Avenue.
Redhead - 11:00am - Redhead Memorial Park, Redhead, Club Redhead Bowling Club
Scone – Cenotaph, near the Scone Memorial Swimming Pool, ceremony will start at 10.30am.
Singleton – 10.30am in Burdekin Park.
Speers Point – 10.40am, Cenotaph, Speers Point RSL sub-branch
Stockton - 11:00am, Cenotaph, Rawson Park, Mitchell Street, Stockton RSL sub-branch.
Swansea - 11:00am, War Memorial in front of Swansea RSL, Chalmers Street, Swansea.
Tanilba Bay - 10.30am for a 10.45am start at the Tilligerry RSL Sports Club Cenotaph, Lemon Tree Passage Road.
