CWA branches in Maitland and across NSW have raised $35000 toward the first stage of research, but another $100,000 is needed to finish the pilot study.
Murdoch University’s Veterinary Branch is conducting the research through its Vector and Waterborne Research Group in a bid to uncover the missing links.
The study will look at blood and urine samples from people who have been bitten by a tick in Australia and now suffer chronic disease symptoms that a doctor has diagnosed as a lyme-like illness.
Maitland CWA president Barbara Heckman said the federal government must recognise lyme disease and support sufferers.
“We didn’t know a lot about it until we heard Tahlia Smith had it; hearing about her story put a face on the issue,” she said.
“It’s an illness that’s not recognised here and it often goes undiagnosed for so many years.
“We wanted to help make an impact – I know its only a small drop in the pond but it’s a start and hopefully more groups will get on board and help.”
Mrs Heckman said the group raised $2000 toward the research and had spent the past year raising more money for the cause.
“We are fortunate that we own our hall so we can rent it out and raise money that way, we also have fundraisers through the year like our tea rooms at Maitland Show and our Christmas fair and Australia Day fundraising stall,” she said.
The Lyme Disease Association of Australia helped link the CWA with the research team. Vice president Jennifer Sherer praised the group for standing behind the issue.
“Without groups like the CWA helping to fund research this pilot study wouldn’t be possible – we need to find out what it is about Australian ticks that are making people sick,” she said.
