Police were called about 11.45pm Monday after someone forced entry to the store through the automatic doors.
The offender attempted to break into the cigarette cabinet, but was unable to force it open.
The person then made off with some small loose items.
Police are investigating the matter and were conducting forensic examinations on Tuesday morning.
The store was temporarily closed while the examinations took place, but re-opened about 8.15am.
Central Hunter acting crime manager Detective Sergeant Mitch Dubojski said police apologised for any inconvenience to shoppers.
Sergeant Dubojski said police were confident of finding the offenders with the assistance of CCTV footage.
