Trevor (Coxy) Cox, was found dead on Thursday morning at Maitland’s Coachstop Caravan Park.
A larger than life and colourful character, Mr Cox was known as the Maitland homeless man, a familiar face along High Street, spotted regularly greeting shoppers near Westpac Bank.
Police have notified the family.
They described Mr Cox, 60, as a well-known local in the Maitland community. He had been living in the area as a homeless person for the past 30 years, a statement said.
Mr Cox was described as Caucasian appearance, about 175cm to 180cm tall with a large build and blue eyes.
Police were saddened to learn of Trevor’s passing and are now appealing for anyone with information on his next of kin to come forward and contact Maitland Police or Crime Stoppers.
Fairfax Media understands Mr Cox recently obtained a residence at the caravan park.
Police were alerted to his death early Thursday morning after his body was discovered. They said there were no suspicious circumstances.
In 2013 Fairfax Media reported how Mr Cox was alive and well, despite reports that he had passed. A Facebook page titled RIP Trevor Cox Maitland Legend, was also set up at the time.
On January 24, 2013, a Fairfax report said: “Maitland’s most watched man Trevor Cox has been sighted alive and well.” At the time, Fairfax Media was flooded with inquiries and messages of concern about Mr Cox’s welfare.
