Police said the truck driver misjudged the distance from the fully laden train, which was travelling towards Newcastle, when he crossed the Mitchell Avenue tracks about 11am.
The Pacific National train clipped the rear of the truck, which knocked a concrete block off the back.
The tracks remained closed for more than an hour while investigations were carried out by police and Pacific National.
Neither the truck nor train driver were seriously injured in the incident.
Both drivers were breath-tested at the scene and returned negative readings.
The block was removed from the area by a forklift before the track was re-opened.
Pacific National used the incident to urge drivers to be cautious at rail crossings.
“It takes a 1.5 kilometre long freight train travelling at 100km/hour approximately two kilometres to come to a complete stop, and that is after the train driver has seen the vehicle not slowing down,” Pacific National CEO Dean Dalla Valle said.
