Maitland highway patrol Sergeant Damon Bugden said police were “going from one crash to the next” during the morning.
Officers were called out to Trappaud Road, Louth Park about 6am after a car collided with a pole.
Police were also on scene at the New England Highway near Ferraby Drive, opposite Heritage Gardens at East Maitland after a car flipped onto its side shortly before 9am.
Traffic was also heavy at the roundabout at Maitland Train Station.
Sergeant Bugden said because rain had been so scarce in recent times, the sudden downpour had caused puddles on the roads due to drains being blocked.
He urged people to slow down in the rain and drive to the conditions.
