It was the type of day Billie Mayson-Kinder would have loved; particularly if she got to spend it at Donkey Welfare With Heart, the Maitland group that provides care for more than 200 donkeys in need.
And although Billie wasn’t there herself, Monday was all about her.
The 12-year-old equestrian champion was tragically killed in an accident while leading a horse in 2016, spurring her parents to create the Fly High Billie foundation in her memory.
The not-for-profit organisation raises money for groups and charities in need, with the donkey charity the latest to receive their assistance.

The funds from Billie’s charity enabled Donkey Welfare With Heart to build a new stable at their Berry Park base, which will house elderly donkeys during the winter.
Fittingly titled “Billie’s Barn”, the new structure was officially opened on Monday with the appropriate fanfare.
Billie’s mother Danny explained that Billie’s affection for donkeys was fostered by her English grandparents, who attended the ceremony on Monday.
“Billie loved animals and I know this is just something she’d absolutely love,” Danny said.
“When we were looking for a donkey charity to donate to, I read their slogan, ‘Happiness has long ears’, and I could hear my little Billie laugh.”
Donkey Welfare With Heart founder, Christine Berry, said it was a big contribution from a “special” family.
“We couldn’t have built the shed without their contribution,” she said.
The barn was opened with a procession of donkeys led by the Maitland City Pipe and Drum Band, who volunteered to play at the day.
Fittingly, the lead donkey was named Rainbow – the symbol used for Billie’s charity, as well as the symbol that adorns the cover of Billie’s published book of poems, titled ‘Hope’.
There wasn’t a dry eye in the paddock when the Scottish band then launched into a sobering rendition of ‘Amazing Grace’.
“It was a beautiful ceremony, we’re so glad for their help,” Christine added.
