Author Mem Fox, an icon of children’s literature, was in town yesterday as part of the celebration of Maitland Community Preschool’s 50th anniversary celebrations.
And true to form, Mem found time to read to the children who sat engrossed.
Event organiser Joe Gollan was thrilled to have such a big name – and someone still so down to earth – as part of the day.
“The thing with Mem is that she’s not just a great children’s author but she’s also just a really decent person.
“She has spoken at length in Australia, and all around the world, about how important literacy is for children, and adults.
“We 70 years of quality educating and nurturing of our small kids is something well and truly worth celebrating, and it was great to have Mem as part of that.”
The author has written more than 40 children’s books and her first, Possum Magic, is still available in hardback after 35 years.
Her books have been translated into 21 languages, and many have been international best sellers.
