The armed man walked into Tenambit Cellars about 7.30pm Wednesday where he held up a knife and demanded cash.
But rather than complying with the demand, the person behind the counter pulled out a wooden bat and told the offender to get out of the store.
The tactic worked and the would-be robber fled empty-handed.
The shop owner chased the man onto Maize Street then onto Tyrrell Street before losing sight of him. The man was last seen running on Clarence Street.
Police are seeking information to identify the offender.
He was described as Caucasian, about 180cm, with an athletic build. He was wearing a white hooded jacket, black trackpants, black shoes and a red bandanna over his face at the time of the incident.
Any information should be reported to Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
