On December 14, patrons will enjoy a festive three course dinner, and then hear first-hand encounters from an ex-warder about what a prisoner’s Christmas Day was like inside the walls.
Maitland Gaol service delivery officer Zoe Whiting said it was something different for the normal Christmas dinners.

“We have an ex-warder who worked in the kitchen at Maitland Gaol, so he is going to do a talk on how they prepared the food and got everything ready,” she said.
“It’s going to give a real insight into what happened on Christmas Day for the prisoners.”
Tickets are $85 per person, with the Christmas feast and tour running from 6pm to 9pm on Friday, December 14.
“This is the first for Christmas. We have done a seasonal harvest before but this one is specifically themed for Christmas,” Ms Whiting said.
“It’s themed around the type of food that would’ve been served to prisoners during Christmas time which you’d think was awful. It’s actually pretty amazing the spread they put on for prisoners during Christmas.
“It’s a unique idea, and people seem quite interested in it.” Visitors need not worry about being served the stereotypical prison ‘slop’ with the menu promising a delicious meal including roast chicken and vegetables, honey glazed carrots and even Christmas pudding.
“It’ll be a really good spread, and for the price it’s a great opportunity to grab some friends together,” Ms Whiting said.
“We should have some of our honey here on the night, and which will be used in the food. We also have some produce growing in our garden in preparation for the night.”
Coordinator Maitland Gaol coordinator Gordon Sauber said the inaugural Christmas feast comes after the success of the facility’s season dinner in June.
“We’re excited to run something like it again in December … Because it’s Christmas time things will be a bit different and that will make it even more enjoyable,” he said.
“I’m also excited about the opportunity to once again showcase some of Maitland’s delicious produce and that of course, includes our garden.”
