Christmas preparations are in full swing but that doesn’t mean you can’t stop for a moment to stop and smell the gingerbread.
To celebrate the festive season, we’ve rounded up a list of top 10 Christmas movies sure to entertain.

10. Die Hard
A little action never hurt anyone.
SYNOPSIS: New York City policeman John McClane (Bruce Willis) is visiting his estranged wife (Bonnie Bedelia) and two daughters on Christmas Eve. He joins her at a holiday party in the headquarters of the Japanese-owned business she works for. The festivities are interrupted by a group of terrorists who take over the exclusive high-rise, and everyone in it. Very soon McClane realizes that there's no one to save the hostages, but him.
9. The Polar Express
One to make you believe in Santa no matter how old you are.
SYNOPSIS: Tom Hanks and director Robert Zemeckis reunite for Polar Express, an adventure based on the children's book by Chris Van Allsburg. When a doubting young boy takes an extraordinary train ride to the North Pole, he embarks on a journey of self-discovery that shows him that the wonder of life never fades for those who believe.
8. The Santa Clause
Tim Allen does it again.
SYNOPSIS: Divorced dad Scott (Tim Allen) has custody of his son (Eric Lloyd) on Christmas Eve. After he accidentally kills a man in a Santa suit, they are magically transported to the North Pole, where an elf explains that Scott must take Santa's place before the next Christmas arrives. Scott thinks he's dreaming, but over the next several months he gains weight and grows an inexplicably white beard. Maybe that night at the North Pole wasn't a dream after all - and maybe Scott has a lot of work to do.
7. The Holiday
A little romance, a few laughs and a lot of heart.
SYNOPSIS: After bering dumped, English-rose Iris agrees to swap homes with similarly unlucky in love Californian Amanda for a much-needed break. Iris finds herself in a palatial Hollywood mansion while Amanda navigates the lanes of a picture-perfect English village. Soon enough, both lovelorn ladies bump into local lads perfect for a romantic pick-me-up.
6. How the Grinch Stole Christmas
This is the one for you if you’re in the mood for a good laugh.
SYNOPSIS: In this live-action adaptation of the children's tale by Dr. Seuss, the reclusive green Grinch (Jim Carrey) decides to ruin Christmas for the cheery citizens of Whoville. Reluctantly joined by his hapless dog, Max, the Grinch comes down from his mountaintop home and sneaks into town to swipe everything holiday-related from the Whos. However, the bitter grump finds a hitch in his plans when he encounters the endearing Cindy Lou Who (Taylor Momsen).
5. Elf
A family favourite.
SYNOPSIS: Buddy (Will Ferrell) was accidentally transported to the North Pole as a toddler and raised to adulthood among Santa's elves. Unable to shake the feeling that he doesn't fit in, the adult Buddy travels to New York, in full elf uniform, in search of his real father – Walter Hobbs (James Caan), a cynical businessman. After a DNA test proves this, Walter reluctantly attempts to start a relationship with the childlike Buddy with increasingly chaotic results.
4. Miracle on 34th Street
Who could go past this classic?
SYNOPSIS: Six-year-old Susan Walker (Mara Wilson) is skeptical of the Christmas myth surrounding Santa Claus, a trait she perhaps learned from her mother, Dorey (Elizabeth Perkins). When tasked with hiring the Santa who will pose with kids at Macy's, Dorey enlists a man with the curious name of Kris Kringle (Richard Attenborough) who claims to be Santa himself. His assertions are met with scoffs and threats of institutionalization, but a young lawyer, along with Susan and Dorey, comes to his defense.
3. It’s a Wonderful Life
A heartwarming tale for the whole family this Christmas.
SYNOPSIS: George Bailey has so many problems he is thinking about ending it all - and it's Christmas. As the angels discuss George, we see his life in flashback. As he is about to jump from a bridge, he ends up rescuing his guardian angel, Clarence - who then shows George what his town would have looked like if it hadn't been for all his good deeds over the years.
2. Love Actually
Mutiple plots, a dancing Hugh Grant and classic tunes – the popularity of this 2003 Christmas film cannot be ignored.
SYNOPSIS: Nine intertwined stories examine the complexities of the one emotion that connects us all: love. Among the characters explored are David (Hugh Grant), the handsome newly elected British prime minister who falls for a young junior staffer (Martine McCutcheon), Sarah (Laura Linney), a graphic designer whose devotion to her mentally ill brother complicates her love life, and Harry (Alan Rickman), a married man tempted by his attractive new secretary.
1. Home Alone
Wet Bandits Harry and Marv were trying to rob the McCallisters, but this movie stole audiences’ hearts.
SYNOPSIS: When 8-year-old Kevin McCallister (Macaulay Culkin) acts out the night before a family trip to Paris, his mother (Catherine O'Hara) makes him sleep in the attic. After the McCallisters mistakenly leave for the airport without Kevin, he awakens to an empty house and assumes his wish to have no family has come true. His excitement sours when he realizes that two con men (Joe Pesci, Daniel Stern) plan to rob the McCallister residence, and that he alone must protect the family home.
